This has been an argument for quite some time and a question that remains unanswered. I think there was a point in my life when I raised this question: Did God create evil? I asked my parents about that. But they ended up arguing.
“Christianity teaches that God is all powerful and all-loving created the universe. By the Christian definition, everything is created by God. Everything includes evil and sins. So it is a local deduction that evil and sins are created by God”. I got this statement from a non-believer of the Christian faith in an internet forum in a certain all-Christian website. This statement was clarified and argued, and they came up with a possible answer.
I also researched about other non-Catholics who understood the words “create” and “evil”. Luckily, by this time, I got the side of a Jew. If a Christian refers to the bible and believes in God and Jesus Christ, the Jews, on the other hand, believe only to the main Creator and their holy doctrine, the Torah.
In my humble opinion, God didn’t create evil. Why?
Let’s take heat and light as an example. Heat is energy, same as light. Some say that the opposite of heat is coldness. No, it is wrong. Coldness is not the opposite of heat, but merely the absence of heat. And darkness is the absence of light. Just like evilness and goodness. Evilness is the absence of goodness and righteousness.
“If we classify evil as the absence of good, then it couldn’t be a created thing, and if it’s not a created thing, God couldn’t have created it. Remember this next time you are challenged to defend the goodness of God in the face of all evil in the world. Evil is not the opposite of good, but the absence of good”, according to one of my sources.
Yes, He created Lucifer, who is a fallen angel. But it doesn’t mean that He created evil.
He only gave us free will, it is the power of independent action or choice (from Encarta Dictionary). Now, we have two choices: to do good or to do bad. He instructed us to do what is morally righteous. He told us to obey His rules. And because of free will, we either choose to obey Him or not.
The bottom line is: we create our own EVIL. Even if I’m a Christian, I believe in the Buddhist philosophy of KARMA. In everything we do, there’s always a consequence. If we do good, most likely we will be able to experience good things. But when we do the opposite thing, then we’re asking for bad things. That is, what goes around, comes around… what goes up MUST come down…
Some people blame God for their misfortune. That’s crap. God doesn’t control our lives. We control our own lives. Just like what this saying goes, “We are the captains of our own ships”. He only looks over us, trying to see what we are doing. He is guiding us. He is not an authoritative figure in-charge if our lives. I think people blame God for their misery, it is because they think that God created evil. I am a Christian but I am not fond of remembering the verses in the Bible which support these statements. All I can say is that my FAITH is intact, and this is the reason why I’m saying that God didn’t create evil. Well, I think it’s up to people on what to believe. After all, there’s no sense in pushing my beliefs to them.
